[K-POP] BTS Military Service News, Enlistment Dates, and Discharge Dates Summary

BTS Military Service Updates & Enlistment/Discharge Dates

BTS is a globally renowned K-pop boy group that has gained massive popularity beyond Korea. Unfortunately, their activities are currently limited due to mandatory military service, which all South Korean men must fulfill. Let’s go over each member’s military updates, including their enlistment and discharge dates.

Military Service Updates

Jin

On October 17, 2022, BigHit Music announced that Jin had applied to cancel his military service postponement and would follow the Military Manpower Administration’s procedures. It was expected that he would enlist as soon as he received his draft notice. On October 28, during a Weverse live stream, Jin stated that he would submit his cancellation request within a few days upon returning to Korea, officially confirming his two-year military enlistment plan. Though he postponed his enlistment due to the deferral system, he was unfortunately caught up in unnecessary controversies due to political and media speculation, as well as remarks made by HYBE CCO Lee Jin-hyung.

On November 13, Jin left a comment on Weverse saying, “Frontline, here I come,” indicating that he would be enlisting at the recruit training center in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province, on December 13. For safety reasons, fans were advised to refrain from visiting the site on his enlistment day. In January 2023, Jin was assigned as an assistant instructor at the training center and took on a leadership role during the completion ceremony. His fellow members later visited him, confirming that he was doing well.

Jin took leave on March 25 and April 18, spending time with his members and seeing J-Hope off for his enlistment. J-Hope later shared that Jin had been calling him daily to offer support and had advised him to bring books before enlisting. On May 19, controversy arose when a military nurse was investigated for allegedly leaving her post to administer a vaccine to Jin. On July 9, Jin was selected as an "Elite Warrior" (Special Forces Soldier) and was promoted to Corporal ahead of schedule. On July 26, he met WINNER’s Kang Seung-yoon and shared a photo on Weverse. On December 4, Jin celebrated his birthday with a post on Weverse, revealing that he had been promoted to Sergeant earlier than usual.

Suga

Among BTS members, Suga was the only one expected to serve as a social service worker rather than an active-duty soldier. This was speculated to be due to a shoulder dislocation injury caused by a traffic accident in 2012, though BigHit stated they could not confirm the details. Reports at the end of 2022 revealed that Suga had been classified for alternative service following a military physical examination.

Suga officially began his military service as a social service worker on September 22, 2023, making him the last member to enlist and the one with the latest discharge date. On June 12, 2024, he took leave to celebrate Jin’s discharge, and photos of them together were shared online.

J-Hope

On February 26, 2023, J-Hope applied to cancel his enlistment postponement, making him the second BTS member to enlist after Jin. He joined the 36th Infantry Division’s training center in Wonju on April 18, with Jin taking leave to see him off.

During his service, J-Hope was assigned as an assistant instructor at the training center. On October 6, he was recognized as a Special Warrior, and in November, he was promoted early to Corporal and became a squad leader.

J-Hope completed his military service on October 17, 2024, after 18 months of duty. The day before his discharge, he teased his return on Instagram with a “D-1” post. On his discharge day, Jin welcomed him back, and J-Hope playfully held a microphone for reporters, creating a lighthearted moment.

RM

On April 1, 2023, RM revealed that his enlistment had been delayed due to an ongoing music project. However, he eventually enlisted alongside V on December 11, 2023.

On January 16, 2024, RM and V were both awarded for being top recruits at the training completion ceremony. RM was later assigned to the 15th Infantry Division’s military band as a saxophone player. He was also seen playing the saxophone during the April 3 training center completion ceremony.

On June 12, 2024, RM performed a saxophone piece to celebrate Jin’s discharge and posted on Instagram with the caption, “Congrats on your discharge, Dad.” On February 1, 2025, he announced his promotion to Sergeant, having received an early promotion to Corporal.

Jimin

Jimin enlisted in the 5th Infantry Division’s recruit training center on December 12, 2023. On January 17, 2024, he was awarded the top recruit distinction and led the oath-taking ceremony at his training completion event.

He was later assigned to an artillery brigade under the 5th Infantry Division. On June 2, 2024, it was revealed that he had been selected as a Special Warrior and had received an early promotion.

On May 2, 2024, photos of Jimin undergoing KCTC training were released. Additional pictures from an April KCTC battle exercise were shared on August 21. On June 12, 2024, Jimin made his first public appearance since enlistment while attending Jin’s discharge event with his fellow BTS members. He later updated fans with a Weverse post on his birthday (October 13, 2024) and shared a Lunar New Year greeting on January 29, 2025.

V

V enlisted at the Nonsan Army Training Center on December 11, 2023, alongside RM, with other BTS members coming to see them off. On January 16, 2024, he was recognized as one of the top recruits alongside RM.

Before enlistment, V had applied for and was accepted into the military police's Special Duty Team (SDT), an elite counterterrorism unit. After completing additional training at the Army Administrative School, he was assigned to the 2nd Corps Military Police Special Task Force in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province.

In April 2024, photos of V training in full tactical gear were shared online and quickly went viral. Major Korean and international news outlets reported on his military service, highlighting the positive impact on the public image of the South Korean military.

In October 2024, SNS posts from V’s senior soldiers who had completed their service revealed heartwarming stories about his kindness and leadership in the unit.

Jungkook

Jungkook enlisted in the 5th Infantry Division’s recruit training center on December 12, 2023. Ahead of his enlistment, he shaved his head himself. After completing training, he was assigned to an artillery brigade under the 5th Infantry Division and has reportedly been serving as a military cook.

Unlike other members, Jungkook has remained largely absent from public updates since enlisting, which has left fans eager for news about him.
